Language at its finest

When Daddy came home from school on Monday Rachel initiated a snowball fight with him.

She is a great thrower but not the best aimer so Andrew was able to teach her the playground chant “missed me, missed me, now you gotta kiss me!”

Then he’d chase her around until he’d catch her and make her give him a kiss.

Well, it just so happened that one time she pegged him. He started singing to her again, only this time he sang,

“Got me, got me! Now you’ve got to…mot me!”

Rachel did a little war cry and ran at him screaming,

“I’m motting you! I’m motting you! I’m motting you!”

It was classic; like the wug test had danced off my textbook pages and into my real life.

My favorite part is that she’s still using the “word” mot even though none of us has any idea what it means. Perhaps we should make up a meaning…some kind of action…motting…

Suggestions?

  1. what fun is it if you can't make up words? when she's in 2nd grade and telling someone to mot her, she'll feel like a genius for being the only one who knows what that is. :)

  2. Probably something relatively nonviolent just in case she continues to "mot" her daddy! Hmm... a bear hug?
