I've been feeling a little sad today

You would think that my psyche would be able to come out of a silly little internet quiz unscathed, but it can't. You see, I've always enjoyed writing. I got A's on most of my papers in college and even helped my mom write her prospectus for her dissertation. She's let me edit parts of her dissertation. I edit plenty of Andrew's papers. I write all the time, so I was a little miffed when I did a readability quiz and my results were this:

I was like, "Oh, great. I write at a Junior High level and I'm thinking of attempting grad school?!?"

So I was sad. Andrew wasn't online all day, so I couldn't turn to him to boost my ego. Instead I talked with my mom.

"Mom!" I whined, "I feel stupid. I want you to tell me that I'm not."

So she did. She's a good mom.

We decided that since it's at a junior high level, it's just more readable and easy to enjoy. College level writing is typically boring--which, for the most part, I'll believe.

Still I was a little perplexed, so after I wrote a post for The Mother's Lounge, I had just that post rated and this time my results were so much more gratifying.

So I guess I just cover the whole spectrum. Man, I'm smrt.

  1. You ARE smart! You're just trying to appeal for a wide variety of readers and therefore it's not stuffy and boring. Just like your mom said!

    Also, I was just skimming The Mother's Lounge and I saw you request a wassail recipe. I just made wassail for the first time last night and it was delish.

    Lion House Wassail

    INGREDIENTS

    * 2 1/4 cups white sugar
    * 4 cups water
    * 2 cinnamon sticks
    * 1 slice fresh ginger root
    * 4 cups orange juice
    * 2 cups lemon juice
    * 8 cups apple juice
    * 8 whole allspice berries
    * 1 tablespoon whole cloves

    DIRECTIONS

    1. In a large saucepan, combine sugar and water. Boil for 5 minutes. Remove from heat, and add cinnamon sticks, allspice berries, cloves, and ginger. Cover and let stand in warm place for 1 hour.
    2. Strain liquid into a large pot. Just before serving, add juices and cider and quickly bring to boil. Remove from heat and serve.

    I didn't have any ginger root, so I just put a couple of dashes of ginger powder in.

    Enjoy!

  2. Awww...thanks Amanda! :)

    And thanks for the recipe, too! I'll have to try it this Christmas.

    And sorry I haven't participated in your contest...I have so many other things on my list to do right now :) Let's just say I don't know what most of them are off the top of my head!

  3. You're welcome!

    And no worries. Next time I have a contest it'll be a lot less work. :)

  4. Hey, don't worry. My blog was rated a jr. high level too. I think it's because I actually want people to choose to read it instead of saying 'oh this is so boring!' and skipping over it. Also, does adding pictures downgrade the ranking? because that would make a difference too I think. Also, if you add me as a contributor I'll put a REALLY great wassail recipe up-it's from my mom's Austrian family and it is soooo good (without being too hard-you just put all the stuff in and let it cook!)

  5. Try rating individual posts. :) Mine was rated at high school level overall LOL. but if you do individual posts, it often comes up with Genius level (oh, and I think it uses the "fog index" to figure this out: a strictly mathematical equation revolving around how many sentences, how long the sentences are, how many words in a paragraph, and how many 3-syllable words in the paragraph).

  6. That's what Andrew and I figured as well.

    And I did start testing my individual posts--that's how I got the genius level at the bottom :)

  7. My blog posted at a high school level, not sure why, it's all pictures and recipes. My story blog at an elementary school level :( boo on me, and I thought it was going so well!

  8. Let it be stated that this test is no reflection on one's writing capabilities.

  9. NO, in fact, according the fog index, average people read things at about a score of 8 - we like it simple and plain! Anything about 12 is getting seriously academic, and I've seen one or two articles that score at something like a 24 (ridiculous, really -- no on in their right minds reads that stuff! Only doctors. The medical kind. :-D )
