But I don't think it's everything that God has ever said or everything that he has intended to say. I believe it is true, that the correct principles contained within it are true, but it was written down by fallible beings. People who had their own ideas and traditions that were worked into the writing simply because that's how people work. David Bokovoy's book Authoring the Old Testament is really eye-opening. He separates the different narratives that are all entwined, and points out how things change depending on who is doing the narrative. If you want to check it out... (if you don't want to buy it I'd be happy to lend it to you if you want to read it).

Anyway, my basic belief is that all is good comes from God and anything evil does not. There is good and evil in every person and society. I don't really know how to fix that, and although I'm sure God does...he also allows us our agency. I imagine that to be terribly frustrating because the human race is pretty slow sometimes to recognize terrible atrocities, even when they're staring us right in the face. :/

Anyway... History is hard and complicated; with hindsight we can see that certain practices and attitudes were so, so very wrong. But in the moment they seemed natural, normal, even right. "

Oddly, I was just thinking of slavery last night though I can't remember why now. I tend to agree more and more with my atheist friend. If God in the Bible can outright condemn pork eating and mixing fabrics, why in the world could he not outright condemn owning people and rapists?Susannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03115294023069458287noreply@blogger.com
