Rachel's stocking

Last year I spent most of my free time between Thanksgiving Break and Christmas furiously knitting on my knifty knitter (which means I knitted all day on Thanksgiving and all day on the 23rd). I finally finished my stocking on the eve of Christmas Eve. I decided to make Rachel's a little earlier this year so that we didn't have the pre-Christmas rush with it and finished it a few days ago.

She absolutely loved to watch me work. No matter where I'd lay her on the floor, she'd scoot around and roll over to the yarn. It was kind of like having a kitten around. I put her on my lap a few times while I was working so that we could talk to each other a little easier, and so that she wouldn't completely roll up in the yarn. She sure is curious about everything! She kept grabbing onto the kitter--and she's got some grip, let me tell you!

I was hoping that she would fit inside it all cute...but when we tried putting her in it she ended up looking more like an awkward red and white mermaid than a cute little baby in a Christmas stocking.

Oh, well. She was really excited about having a stocking anyway.

I still want to find some way to put her name on it so that we will remember whose is whose when our family is larger than 3. I was hoping to find some cute pewter letters, but so far I haven't found anything that has met my imagination's demands. What I'm hoping for are 2-dimensional letters on squares that are about an inch tall, but flat. Did that make sense? So far though, all I've found are cube beads, or letter cutouts. The letter cutouts would work, but I really just want the letters on squares. And then I'd tie them on with ribbons. Nothing like that seems to exist though. Ho-hum. I suppose it's okay for now since we will be able to remember for a few years, but there are only so many color combinations--I'm not sure I'll be able to make enough individualized stockings without putting names on somehow.

  1. *sighs* this is on my list of things to do. . .I actually want to do cross stitch ones, and they will take a long time, but yours are so cute! well done!

  2. Embroider the names with yarn instead of embroidery floss... ?

  3. I have not had patience to get the Knifty Knitter to work for me yet. *grump* I think I'll have my grandma teach me with needles over Christmas. She's the one that taught me how to embroider, and she is awesome.

But I agree with Heidi's suggestion.

  5. Cross-stitch could work!

If we were closer, we could totally trade. You teach me knitting, I teach you the fine art of embroidery. Or, you knit my baby's stockings, and I embroider names.

Oh wait, not only am I not there, I don't have a baby. But at the rate I embroider recently, it might not be a bad idea to start now.
