Every day I'm slip-slip-slippin'

Last night we read Heleman 13 together as a family. Some of us sat and followed along while others of us ran around like hooligans. Alexander was part of the latter. He had on footie jammies, which is a dangerous thing to wear when you live in a house with wood floors. Technically footie jammies have "grippies" at the bottom of the "feeties" but these grips are really never very functional (and, frankly, babies would probably be safer without them (but I just thought: maybe they're not for traction at all...maybe they're for durability)).

So, I'm reading verse 31...

"And behold, the time cometh that he curseth your riches, that they become slippery..."

And, as if on cue, Alexander slipped and crashed. He was fine. We giggled a bit and then dove back in.

"...that ye cannot hold them..." I continued on through verse 32 and into verse 33. "Yea, in that day ye shall say: O that we had remembered the Lord our God in the day that he gave us our riches, and then they would not have become slippery..."

And, as if on cue, Alexander slipped and crashed. Again.

Verse 35 was read by someone else (not me): "Yea, we have hid up our treasures and they have slipped..."

Alexander: "Whoa! *crash* Ouch!"

We were all laughing so hard we could hardly breathe. It seemed like every time we mentioned slipping Alexander would somehow wind up flat on his back. It was too funny.

It reminds me of a some family lore from Andrew's side of the family* where they were having morning scripture study (something we've never managed to pull off; we do evenings instead) and there was a verse about a mighty quaking or trembling (in our collective memory, Andrew and I came up with the word "rumbling," but it certainly wasn't that word because that only shows up in the scriptures once and it wouldn't have warranted the, uhhhh, following tale) and Karen, in Andrew's words, "let it rip," shocking the children all into a fit of giggles.

This, in turn, reminds me of a story that I've never told in public because it would have been embarrassing for Karen...but it also needs to be recorded because it was hilarious (and no longer embarrassing).

So, shortly after Andrew and I were married we went over to his parents' house for dinner and games. The game of choice that evening was Mexican Train and after a few rounds, Karen left us all shuffling the tiles and sneaked off to relieve some gas pains. She figured that she could do her thing in the living room while we were shuffling the tiles (a noisy endeavor) and we would be none the wiser. Unfortunately, we all stopped shuffling tiles (it really doesn't take that long) just as she "let it rip."

And it was hilarious.

* Benjamin is very confused about "sides of family." He often will ask which side of the family he's on. I have explained to him several times that he's on both sides of the family, that sides of the family only exist after you get married. There's "Mommy's side of the family" with all of Mommy's brothers and sisters and parents and aunts and uncles and so forth and there's "Daddy's side of the family" with Daddy's brothers and sisters and so forth, but all those people are Benjamin's people so when he gets married all the people on Mommy's side of the family and Daddy's side of the family will be Benjamin's side of the family. He might get things from "his mom's side" or "his dad's side" but both sides are his.

"Yeah, but which side of the family am I on?" he'll inevitably respond.

Which is also hilarious.
