Two little peas

This morning while Benjamin, Zoë and I were discussing the book we'd just finished reading together (The Red Pencil) and how they might engage with it further (analyzing specific characters or events, brainstorming about alternative titles/covers/endings, and so forth), Alexander and Phoebe were working on a Scratch project together.

Really Alexander was working on a Scratch project, and Phoebe was nestled up beside him, leaning on his shoulder like they're best buds (and they are).

They're so sweet together.

Last night Phoebe woke up at 1:30 am and padded over to the boys' room to wake up Alexander (something she's been doing consistently at 4 or 5 in the morning for quite some time now). Before she was put to bed last night Andrew (who carried out the bedtime routine because I was on campus) had a little talk with her about not waking up her siblings if it's still dark out. Alexander very enthusiastically agreed that this was a good rule of thumb.

While he's enjoyed getting up early to play with her...he's also craving a little more sleep before he starts his day.

"So if the sun's not up, you can't wake Alexander up," Andrew explained.

Sunrise is at 7:30 these days. That's a reasonable hour.

She agreed that she would only wake Alexander up if she could see the sun.

And so it was that we found her shaking Alexander awake at 1:30 in the morning, outrageously and emphatically claiming that she could see the sun—in fact, it was very sunny...what was wrong with all of us?!

Andrew convinced her to get back in her bed and sat with her until she settled down enough to sleep. And we all had a pretty good rest of our night's sleep.

Technically, Alexander should have been participating in our discussion...but also...he's in grade one so I simply don't have the same expectations on how he completes a book report that I have for, say, Zoë and Benjamin. So I figured listening in on our conversations was good enough for him.
