Cancelled Swim Meet

These are the faces of some very disappointed children whose swim meet got cancelled this evening:

We even arrived early so we could start the meet early so we could get some races under our belts before the storm hit. But apparently the storm also got the email because it showed up early, too!

Twice we evacuated the pool deck and went to sit in our cars (I was lucky to get a convenient spot right in the parking lot since we showed up extra early to set up our canopies). And twice we filed back into the pool and got all set up to swim, with kids poised on diving blocks, when it started thundering again.

The second time Phoebe covered her ears and said, "Impressive!"

The heavens were bringing nothing but their best work this evening.

Benjamin was getting increasingly frustrated because he was supposed to swim his first IM (individual medley) this evening and after our first bout of car-sitting they announced that the medleys and relays would be cancelled and we'd just race individual events to try to get through the evening. He and his friends took out their frustration with Sharpies.

For a minute we had hope that blue skies and sunshine would triumph.

But, alas, dark clouds broiling over with energy took over our evening. On the third call to evacuate the pool deck we decided to just call it off. It was 8:00 PM. We had swum only two events (which meant we had 78 more events to go...except that we'd cancelled a good chunk of those). The storm showed no sign of stopping.

The kids were pretty upset, but we already have the meet re-scheduled for later on in June...so they'll get to their medleys and things...fingers crossed (I dunno—it's been a spectacularly wet June, it feels like).

Zoë sang the national anthem before the meet again (her third time this year) and she was talking about how that was her last time until next year (because we've had three "home" meets all in a row and our next three meets are "away" meets, which means we're not in charge of the anthem, etc.). But now it looks like she'll have a little encore at the end of the month!!
