On Tuesday the kids spent all afternoon in the neighbour's kiddie pool. This picture is just Phoebe...because at this moment all the other kids were sitting in front of the fans (they hauled up from our house) in the garage, dripping wet. That must have felt good!
Here's Phoebe in her after-dinner outfit (the sun had already sunk low enough that we weren't concerned about burning at this point) back at the kiddie pool for some more splashing time with friends:
This morning Coach Heidi ended practice for the oldest group fifteen minutes early. It was just too darn hot to keep working them hard. The water was 93°F and the air was already in the 90s as well, with the "feels like" temperature reaching into the triple digits.
We stayed after to swim for a little while, which Coach Heidi disapproved of, but...I'd promised Phoebe some pool time this week and I wasn't sure when we'd fit it in otherwise!
I took Benjamin to mutual and Zoë came along, hoping that her little primary friends would end up tagging along with their fathers (who are YM leaders) and her wish came true because...they did!
H. had to come because her mom was on the way to YW camp to pick up her sister, K, who was suffering from some heat exhaustion and the camp nurse thought it was best if she went home to recover because this heat wave is simply unrelenting and trying to manage day after day in the heat simply wears a body down. K's resting heart rate was 140!
There's no real way to cool off besides in an air conditioned space, which wasn't available at camp.
Come to find out, a lot of the younger girls (and some of the older girls) were struggling quite badly. The entire Lilburn ward packed up and left after a few of their younger girls (apparently they had a lot of younger girls in their ward) started vomiting and collapsing, leading to a discussion about what everyone else should do.
Ultimately they decided to pack up and send everyone home—no one wanted to try sleeping in the cabins again, which were still reaching 99°F late into the evening—so it was a good thing K's mom was on her way to camp with an extra vehicle! She took K home as well as a few other girls.
My girls stayed to help strike camp—they ended up leaving camp around 10:00 pm and arrived home to our house shortly before midnight.
The girls are very excited to be in a cool environment again.
Tomorrow they're heading to the Tucker building to do some day camp activities in the air conditioning. And I think they're planning on doing the same thing on Friday as well. We don't have an updated schedule yet because this decision was so recently made, but I'm sure their leaders will have everything worked out by tomorrow.
We also have a truncated swimming practice schedule for tomorrow so the kids all get a turn in the pool before things really start heating up again. And then we'll just have to see how our last meeting goes...it's supposed to get a little cooler but...if the evening goes anything like this evening has gone (no rain, but so much electricity in the air)...it's going to be rough.
