She also had fluid in her ears, but it appeared to be clear. The doctor assumed it was related to her general head-cold, but it wasn't infected yet. Thus the wait and see approach.
Well, we watched and we saw!
She was still feverish today, so we decided to take her back in, just to be on the safe side, and lo...
Double ear infection.
A pretty severe one, too. Bright yellow pus, bulging ear drum.
"And she hasn't complained about her ears hurting?" the doctor asked.
Not. A. Single. Word.
About the ears.
There's been plenty of complaining otherwise.
I mean, I have a hunch that her absolute meltdown on the 4th of July could have been the apex of the ear infection for her (because she lost her ever-loving mind that day, let me tell you).
Same thing with Alexander—he really didn't complain about his ears hurting until he told us that he flat out couldn't hear out of one ear (though he never had a mega-meltdown over anything). I mean, we've been battling swimmer's ear all summer, but that's typically an outer ear thing. This is an inner ear infection (which typically has more to do with head colds than with swimming). So perhaps we won the battle against swimmer's ear, after all!
We just...lost the battle against this head cold.
Twice now.
Phoebe is a little younger and less communicative than Alexander, so she's on a 10-day course of antibiotics. And then we're supposed to bring them both in for a follow-up visit so that we can take a peek in their ears just to make sure things have cleared up (because the infection is quite severe and because they don't report any pain—usually you can ask your child if their ears feel better...but in this case...they reported to me (and to the doctor) that their ears felt fine).
Right now, I just feel relieved (1) to know what is wrong with her and (2) that we have a prescription that should hopefully have her feeling better soon.
We need sleep.
