In which I eat a thousand cakes and Benjamin poops rainbows

When Phoebe gets up in the morning she likes to sing nursery rhyme games:

  • Round and Round the Garden
  • This Little Piggy
  • Pat-a-Cake, Pat-a-Cake
  • Itsy-Bitsy Spider
  • Five Little Monkeys
  • Little Bunny Foo Foo
You know, things of that nature. This has replaced her nursing time because...she hasn't nursed at all in a couple of weeks now (so I think we're done with that stage of life)...but she still needs some extra special cuddle time before she's ready to face the day.

Yesterday when we woke up, she wanted to play Pat-a-Cake (this morning she wanted me to sing "How Much is That Doggy in the Window" so she could do a lot of barking and panting because she also likes to be a puppy in the mornings). She must have felt badly about slamming her head into my nose or something because she kept stuffing me with confectionery!

The following is a transcript that I wrote down on Facebook (is it cheating to just plop it in here? I don't know...my time is limited and I don't want to reconstruct this conversation in prose form at the minute):

Phoebe: Do pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake…
Me: *proceeds to play with her*
Me: And mark it with a…
Phoebe: P!!
Me: That’s right! P is for Phoebe! So we’ll mark it with a P, and throw it in the oven for Phoebe and me!
Andrew: Ooh! Are we making cake? I want cake!
Phoebe: Let’s make a cake Daddy!
Me: *proceeds to bake a cake for Daddy this time*
Phoebe: Let’s make a cake you, Mommy!
Me: *proceeds to bake a cake for me*
Phoebe: Ding, ding! Yours cake is ready, Mommy! Eat it!
Me: *eats it*
Andrew: Hey, wait a minute! What about my cake? You started my cake first.
Phoebe: Yours cake still in a oven, Daddy!
Andrew: Still?!
Phoebe: Yes! Just wait! You want another cake, Mommy?
Me: Sure!
Phoebe: Pat-a-cake… (etc.)
Phoebe: Here’s yours cake, Mommy!
Me: *eats voraciously*
Andrew: What about my cake?
Phoebe: Still in a oven! You want another cake, Mommy? You want a pie? I’m making rainbow pie.
Me: Rainbow pie?! Sounds delicious.
Phoebe: Here you go!
Me: Yum, yum, yum, yum, yum!
Andrew: Can I have a bite?
Phoebe: No! Yours cake is in a oven still!
Andrew: Still!!!
Phoebe: Yes! Mommy—you want another cake?

She must have fed me fifty different desserts, but no matter how many times Andrew asked about his cake, it was always still in the oven. Poor guy. I offered him a piece of my invisible cake after she climbed out of bed.

The amount of time his cake spent in the oven reminded me of that one time we were trying to make turkey breasts and kept checking the temperature to see if things were done, aiming for 165°F. But the thermometer was set to Celsius and we didn't ever notice...but the thermometer never even rose above 90° and it was so frustrating!!

By the time we realized our mistake (that the thermometer was giving Celsius readings instead of Fahrenheit, and that 90°C is nearly 200°F...so that turkey was more than cooked), we basically had turkey jerky on our hands!!

Anyway, since Phoebe mentioned rainbow pie, here she is yesterday afternoon "soaking up some rainbow pime":

I'd "lost" her for a few minutes. One minute she was with me, the next minute she was not with me and things were altogether too quiet (a bad sign). So I called out to find her and she told me she was upstairs.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Dus...soaking up some rainbow pime..." she said.

"Just soaking up some rainbow time?" I repeated. "Is it rainbow time already?"

"It is!" she said.

****

And since we're talking about rainbow time, and the rainbow originates in the bathroom, I'll tell you that Benjamin used the toilet during rainbow time the other day and then proudly announced to everyone (even Darla (welcome to the family)) that he'd had a "unicorn poop."

So that's nice.
