Vienna 🤝 Doha

When Josie and I visited Patrick in Vienna, he took us to the Vienna Central Cemetery to see graves both famous and interesting. One of his favourite graves to take people to see is that of Franz West, a sculptor from Vienna.

Here is his grave with this interesting worm-thing poking out of the ground:

And here is the sculpture we stumbled upon this evening in the park:

The sign nearby notes that Gekröse (as this sculpture is called) is one of West's largest sculptures, and it translates roughly to "intestines" or "giblets," which is 100% what it resembles. West's skill is to "concurrently attract and repulse the viewer" and I've gotta say—he's effective!

We had intended to go to the park but the pink of the sculpture called to us so we went to check it out first. It is, indeed monumental, imposing, playful, whimsical, cheerful, and twisted.

That's now two sculptural connections to Vienna that we've found in Doha!
