The kids' trip to DC! (March 8-13)

Before Grandpa and Darla got married, Grandpa had talked about taking Benjamin and Zoë up to Washington, DC, as he had done with Rachel and Miriam. Last year was the year he decided he was going to do it, but just before it was time to head out...Grandpa had a medical emergency. So the trip was postponed for six more months, but just before it was time to head out...the government shut down.

So the trip was postponed again until March of this year, a kind of final hurrah before Grandpa and Darla leave for their mission (which has been a whole nother circus of events requiring patience and adaptability because they were first assigned to Jordan and then to the UAE somewhere and now to...nowhere in particular...but definitely in Salt Lake for a while). Anyway, they did finally make it on their DC trip.

Grandpa sent me this itinerary:

Sunday, March 89:00 a.m. church
Depart for Brad and Nancy’s House
Monday, March 9Court House at Appomattox
Marine Corps National Museum
Tuesday, March 10Air and Space Museum

Peterson house, where Lincoln died
American History Museum
Arlington National Cemetery
Wednesday, March 11Walk the Mall to see the following monuments:
Washington
World War II
Vietnam
Lincoln
Korean War
Holocaust Museum
Library of Congress tour

US Capitol
Thursday, March 12Mount Vernon, Home of George Washington

Friday, March 13Depart Clark and Lynnea’s house

And Darla sent me pictures every day!

Benjamin and Zoë have both been working on writing about their adventures, but I will share some extra pictures here and caption them to the best of my abilities...

Zoë, Grandpa, and Benjamin in front of the Capitol Building:

Benjamin and Zoë:

Probably at Quantico:

With Darla and the Capitol Building (?) in the back:

Mount Vernon (maybe):

The Lincoln Memorial:

The other side of the Lincoln Memorial:

Zoë...somewhere:

The crew:

Zoë at the Jefferson Memorial (maybe?):

A war memorial (I think the WWII memorial, where we lost Miriam in DC in 2012):

The Library of Congress:

They had a fabulous time with Grandpa and Darla and our house felt so quiet without them. We're glad they could go on this adventure!

  2. If Reid and Darla end up in the Salt Lake City Headquarters Mission, the Mission Leaders are Scott and Marcia Stanford. They live in the former McCune home. Woudn't that make for a small world!
