I stayed home today instead of doing any cool touristy stuff. Miriam still isn’t quite acting like herself. I think that teething in conjunction with going out in the heat every day for the past few weeks is really putting a cramp in her style so I decided to stay home with her today. She went down for a nap soon after everyone else left so now it’s just me and instead of doing anything useful, I am blogging…which is kind of useful in its own right.
It’s too hot to do much of anything, anyway. It was 109°F (or approximately 43°C) on Sunday. That’s hot.
I stayed home that day, too, actually, and sent Josie and Amanda out with Jaehee and her sister. Rachel and I made some pictures for Mother’s Day so that Rachel could show them to Naanii and Grandma over Skype. While we were working on our pictures we talked about what Mother’s Day was for.
“Today is Mother’s Day,” I told Rachel.
“Because mothers are special.”
“Did you get me something special?”
“No. You’re supposed to do special things for me.”
“To show me that you love me.”
“I do love you.”
“Then why do you need a day?”
“Mother’s Day is a day that you’re supposed to be extra nice to your mommy.”
Later when Andrew asked her what we do on Mother’s Day she answered that we “draw pictures” and when I tried to prompt her to wish Grandma a Happy Mother’s Day she instead said, “It’s Mother’s Day.”
Next year I will start working on this holiday with her a few weeks in advance.
This morning she was grumpy when she got up.
“Get me dressed,” she snapped.
So I got her dressed. When I was finished she went and got her shoes and asked where we were going to go.
“Well, we will be going out later but not right now. You’re the only one up. Everyone else is still sleeping so we have to wait,” I told her.
That answer was followed by some screaming and yelling on Rachel’s behalf.
“Hey,” I said, “You need to stop yelling at me and start acting like a nice girl.”
“Why?” she retorted, “It isn’t Mother’s Day!”
Rachel, of course, is off gallivanting around the town with everyone else right now. She’s been raring to go this morning—even the heat isn’t slowing her down!
So I guess I’m finally getting my Mother’s Day rest. It’s nice.
