Love your (hypothetical) brother?

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned Rachel’s brother, Scott, before. In a nutshell, he doesn’t exist. That doesn’t stop Rachel from talking to him/about him, though. She kind of gave him up a while ago after I told her that I really don’t appreciate it when she tells people that her mommy has a baby brother in her tummy. That’s how rumours get started. So she stopped telling us what Scott’s having for breakfast or what colour he was wearing on a given day.

In fact, Scott had all but disappeared until this morning.

“Mommy, will you have another baby some day?”

“I hope so.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

“Now?”

“No, not now. We still have a baby.”

“But Meme’s a girl baby. I want a boy baby. Will you have a boy baby next?”

“I’ll do my best.”

“What will you name him?”

“I don’t know.”

“How about Scott?”

“Maybe. We’ll see.”

“Will you nurse him?”

“Yes.”

“When I grow up and become a mommy…can I have him? Then I can nurse him!”

“When you grow up, then he’ll be grown up, too. So you can have him for your brother still, but not for your baby. You’ll have your own babies.”

“Mommy?”

“What?”

“I love Scott.”

“Oh, good.”

I guess that’s good, anyway. I wonder if the commandment to love everyone applies even to hypothetical people…
