Not NOT tossing things

We had a rushed dinner of breakfast burritos and fruit smoothies for dinner on Friday.

Rachel's school day doesn't finish until ridiculously late (5:00, folks) so getting dinner in her before she has to head off to any evening activity can be tricky. This Friday she had a sleepover at a friend's house (who was moved into the other ward, unfortunately, but I'm sure they'll manage to stay friends) so we had to get moving quickly.

"Put these back in the freezer outside, please," Andrew said, zipping up the bag of frozen mixed berries.

So Rachel grabbed the berries and headed to the garage when suddenly there arose such a clatter we ran to the living room to see what was the matter.

Frozen berries were everywhere—rolling all over the floor leaving trails of bright red berry juice, oozing down the walls, melting into little puddles of stickiness.

"What...happened?!" I gasped.

"I don't know!" Rachel said. "It just...broke open!"

"Were you tossing it?" I asked.

"NO!" she said. "I was just...I may have moved it away from...like...the wall. The wall was just in the way and I was like, 'Whoa!' and I may have tossed it a little, but just to move it away from the wall, which like—how it was in the way, I don't even know but, like—it wasn't there, and then, like, it just was, and..."

"Rachel."

"What?"

"Were you tossing it?"

"I...not really."

"Rachel, I saw you tossing it as you left the kitchen," Andrew said. "You took it from me and literally tossed it into the air and caught it and then walked down the hall tossing it."

"Well...I..."

"You're not going to get in more trouble if you admit you were tossing it," I said. "What happened happened. However it happened, I think we can agree that more care could have been exercised in the carrying out of this assignment."

"Sure, but I wasn't, like, tossing it," she said.

"But you weren't not tossing it, either," Andrew said.

You guys, there were berries everywhere.

I've never been so thankful for wood floors in all my life (because I'm not sure we could have had such a calm conversation watching those berries melt into carpet). It took us several minutes working together to clean it up and the whole scene looked downright murderous. Red juice was smeared all over the walls and floors, all over our washcloths, all over our hands. It was comical how juicy things got. We should have (but didn't) take a picture—because we had to get to the dinner table to wolf down dinner so that Rachel could get off to her sleepover!

  1. Does Rachel have after-school activities that make her school day finish so late, or does school go that long?

Sorry for the loss of your berries! :)

    1. Well, she takes the bus, so 5:00 is when she gets home after her commute, but school still lets out rather late. No extracurriculars for her yet.
