While of these emblems…

Last week the sacrament hymn was While of These Emblems We Partake (#174). After we had finished singing it, Rachel, instead of folding her arms and reverently getting ready for the prayer, exclaimed,

“That’s a funny song!”

This week we sang While of These Emblems We Partake again (only the other tune, #173). Rachel was even more embarrassing. Of course. She always manages to find a way to outdo herself.

“For us the blood of Christ was shed,” we sang.

“Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer!” Rachel sang.

“For us on Calvary’s cross he bled,”

“Had a very shiny nose!”

We shushed her, of course, but she just kept on singing her own tune.

Luckily we were sitting off in our own little world—there was no one directly in front, behind, or beside us—so no one else heard her. Perhaps that’s not so lucky, come to think of it…and I might have worried about that but the rows soon filled in so there were plenty of people around to hear when Rachel let out a nice little toot.

She gasped in surprise but it wasn’t just a little “oh” it was more like a Tim the Toolman Taylor grunt, complete with rumble and rising intonation: Urghh!

I could hardly control my laughter, but I didn’t feel too bad because no one else around us could, either.

  1. This post made me laugh a lot. I have had my share of being embarrassed by what my kids say. I'm glad I'm not the only one!
(I'm Mary's sister, Tara, by the way)
