Knock on wood

Last week Benjamin stayed dry three nights in a row. Three nights, people!

"Maybe he's finally finished potty training," Andrew remarked casually.

"Noooooooo!" I howled dramatically. "You said The Words! Now you've jinxed everything and he's going to wet the bed and then not stay dry for another month all because you said The Words!"

So, of course, he's back to regularly wetting the bed because he was on a three-day fluke, not a three-day streak.

But speaking of flukes, I had the most fantastic fluke last night: Zoë slept in her bed, alone, from around 11:30 pm to around 1:00 am.

First of all, this is the first time she's gone to bed before 2:00 am in weeks, and the first time she's gone to bed before midnight in months.

Second of all, she let me put her down in her own bed. Her own bed, people! She hasn't slept in her own bed in...ever. She even woke up and looked around and then decided going back to sleep was a fine thing to do. Of course, I ended up sitting beside her with my arm draped over her for about twenty minutes because every time I tried to leave she'd wake up to shoot me a killer look, but eventually I was able to leave her side and she stayed sleeping.
I did the dishes without a screaming baby on my hip (or at all; often Andrew does the dishes because of screaming baby) and was able to brush my teeth without rushing to get back to my screaming baby.

Sure, she was back in our bed by 1:00, and, sure, I nursed her four (or so) times in the night, but she mostly just slept (she didn't wake up and talk to me while patting my face at 5:00 or anything).

And this morning she happily sat in her high chair and fed herself Cheerios (breakfast of champions) instead of screaming her head off nonstop.

I don't even mind bragging about this a little because I don't think I've jinxed a streak because I know it's a fluke. But, man, it's kind of awesome to just put the baby to bed. I haven't managed to have a kid-free minute for so long that I'd forgotten what it felt like to put the baby down and do something else.

Okay, except for the musical, but then I was fretting about her screaming nonstop for someone else so it didn't count as relaxing.

I'm saying: I put the baby to bed. And then she stayed there for a considerable amount of time. (I'd forgotten that babies can do that.) And the house was quiet. And it was amazing.
