Tadpoles: Day 5

It's a relatively warmer though still rather drizzly day. We changed the water for our tadpoles. At first I wasn't sure where we were going to get non-tap water from but then I remembered that we have rain barrels so we have a decent supply of fresh rain water.

After changing the water we noticed little things swimming around inside—mosquito larvae! We spent a decent chunk of time fishing them all out.

I think the tadpole water is thoroughly de-mosquitoed. I certainly don't want those metamorphasizing in the house! Now I need to figure out how the mosquitoes managed to lay eggs into our water barrel in the first place.

The tadpoles are getting more and more entertaining. Now we can see them flitting about in their little egg sacs, which is kind of fun, and they're starting to look more and more like tadpoles.

Before putting Benjamin down for his nap we read See How They Grow: Frog and Tale of a Tadpole as well as flipping through Everything You Need to Know About Frogs (and other slippery creatures). We had just gone to the library before we adopted our tadpoles so I didn't even think about checking any frog books out and we haven't been to the library since we started raising them. Fortunately, there's WeGiveBooks.org and they have a decent collection of child-friendly books about a variety of creatures. My kids like to choose stories to read "on the computer" rather than from the bin of library books (or our personal library). It's something a little different, I suppose.
